TODAY’S young show riders are dedicated and work hard at their craft, and at the NSW Horse of the Year show the attention to detail they have was shown in their success.

Champion Ella Warren and runner up Madeleine Gaden in the under 12 group and champion Claudia Hughes and runner up Tia Rose McKenzie in the 12,13 and 14-year-old class competed on several different ponies. All will be seen as top riders in the future, whether they stay with show horses or branch out into other sections of the sport.

Show hunters have become even more popular and numerous than show hacks, and the contribution in this section by the lighter Warmbloods is showing through.

The top three placegetters in the large show hunters are also winners in dressage. Jermyn Street owned by Sophia Redenbach competes at intermediate level, Karizmah Leroy Brown owned by Carolyn Lieutenant has done well in young horse classes and Penelope Cobbold’s Arnage Royal Edition competes at Prix St George level.

The small show hunter hack winners added extra ribbons to their collection, with the champion Rebelle, shown by Jessica Callus, and Melissa Gillies’ Verdict By Direction, well used to standing at the top of the line-up.

The galloway show hunters were just as strong with Paulgren Park Vancouver, Sophie Walker, and Gentry Park Take Note, shown by Sara Osaulenko, quality hunter types.

Lisa Cleary’s small pony of the year and leading rein show pony of the year Langtree Jiminy Cricket is a real cutie and carried two young riders to wins. The show hunter pony leading rein winner, Kristen Cowdroy’s Yarra Heights Plaything, is the snow-white pony little kids dream about.

The show hunter pony classes show that the true pony type has not been taken over by the finer riding ponies, with the three class winners – Allira Park Paspaley, owned by Hollie McLeod, Tanya Benton-Hall’s Owendale Valencia and Kenda Park Strauss shown by Ella Warren – all being classic ponies.

In the show horse section, the large open hack winner was Sinatra shown by Malcolm MacRae and the small open hack sash went to Leah Walsh’s KP Royal Prince.

The small champion galloway gave Leah Walsh her second sash for the show with Beechwood Bells and Denise Corrigan’s The Duke of Bannerman won the large galloway class.

Two lovely show ponies took out the large and medium classes with Renae Dorney’s Wakefield Classic and Renae Dorney’s Nottingham Royal Highness heading strong classes.

The show was a credit to organisers with 180 riders, 250 horses and all classes ran smoothly and to perfect time.

With three months to go to the National Show Horse championships in December, NSW has chosen a strong group of representatives.
